In an effort to further a webmaster’s control over their domain, it seems only fitting that Digg should offer such control. Sure doing something nifty and getting noticed for it is grand, but Digg and Slashdot are both known for their ability to render servers helpless and leave them huddled on the ground holding their head in pain.
For this the obvious answer is to create a new recognized value for the Meta Robots tag. I think Kevin Rose and company ought to implement a new featuring step that if someone goes to add a page to Digg, they ping the site and look for a “nodigg” value, if present the site gets rejected from being added.
If a page is already in the index, the webmaster should be able to add the “nodigg” value and then fill out a removal form on Digg.com, digg then checks if the value is present, and if so they disable the link in the digg item or remove it altogether.
NoDigg is a suggestion and it is for a single site. Social sites could do a standard “NoSocial” and have it used as a default for all social sites: Digg, Reddit, Miss, Slashdot etc.
Just link the idea for the rel=”nsfw”, I doubt this will ever take off, but the time is now to allow people more control over their own site. It may not be used regularly, but it would be handy for those who need it.
