Go Green or Lose The Web - Servers will Crash, Will we make it?

Global Warming on the Rise

The internet and the environment directly affect each other and most of us don’t even realize it. The servers responsible for the internet as we know it put off massive amounts of heat, and with the overall climate changes and heat on the rise, what are the possible implications? Well let me tell you…

It starts off with a slight temperature increase in the globe, whether it be from overall global warming or any type of catastrophe that could launch this event.

A few possibilities…

Pollution causes a flux in the environment, raising the overall global temperatures by a few degrees. This may not seem like such a big deal, but when you run a server farm every degree counts. We’re already experiencing issues in server heat distribution, noted by Google, the biggest indexer of the web. If you’re always running at full capacity and can’t figure out how to effectively index the entire web in our current conditions, could you imagine if things got even hotter? It may not crash the web at a few degrees, but a whole new set of problems might arise.

War is responsible for most of the worlds problems, at least the really frightening ones. “What if a nuke goes off?” seems to be the big question now days… well let me tell you. If a nuke goes off anywhere in the world scientists have proven we’ll all feel the effects… but how? Even if just ONE nuclear bomb is detonated anywhere in the world we will see a change in the overall temperature around the globe. As temperatures rise from the explosion more and more issues will arise, but let’s just focus on heat for this one. So heat is up, pollution is still kicking, and what happens to our servers?

Servers crash. If you can’t get rid off the heat then you can’t operate your servers, and without the servers constantly monitoring, indexing, and operating this massive information highway it all crashes. Scared yet?

  1. Let’s talk about what would actually happen if the servers crashed.
  2. The web comes to a stand still halting our most important and essential tool for running the world economy.
  3. Panic arises and the entire economy behind the internet falls out, losing all interest in what used to be the best means of advertising available.
  4. We won’t be able to vent our emotions and blog daily, driving the entire country into mass hysteria. (okay so this one’s an overstatement.)

You might ask what can we do to avoid losing the most important asset we’ve ever used? Well… next time I’ll let you know what we’re doing to avoid this problem and how everything will be alright… hopefully :)
