We are on the second day and there are already three words that seem to be resonating throughout the many sessions and workshops: passion, agile and synergy. Yes, believe it or not, even we, designers as a whole, are evolving with the needs and trends of the world wide web and we are shifting (sometimes not so gracefully) but we’re here recognizing the need to stay current with user and technology trends and how to be best equipped to design in an ever-evolving scape. We have to get unstuck!

An excellent session entitled Getting Unstuck: Moving From Web 1.0 to 2.0 by Kelly Goto from gotomedia.com defined being unstuck as this: it’s all about context and adaptability….some might call it survival. She goes on to define Web 3.0 as a theory, a philosophy that means many things to different people based on how the context applies to them. But in this session she focuses on the advances/trends seen on the Web 2.0 culture.

The ‘Unstuck’ fundamentals are:

  • Vision, purpose
  • Support, buy-in
  • Knowledge, ability
  • Collaboration, synergy
  • Platform, tools
  • Attitude, fearlessness
  • Progress, results

The traditional corporate culture has the energy of their organization flowing from the top to the bottom of the pyramid, CEO level down to the bottom level. The Web 2.0 culture has the opposite flow, from the bottom up. Case studies: Google was the original bottom > up company. Microsoft followed. These companies combine design and development in order to provide an entire experience to a user, much like eating out combines lots of small tasks to makeup the entire overall experience. Go agile! But keep it tracked. Web 2.0 teams are much smaller clusters, self-managed, and higher skill set. Everyone needs to have clear milestones and be aware of the reporting frequency.

When you think Web 2.0 you should be thinking about getting or accessing content in a placelessness state, wherever you are whenever you are. Limitless.
