Zillow Shakes Up The Online Mortgage Industry – But Does It Make Cents?
For the last 10 years, the online mortgage industry has been predominately dominated by lead generators such as Lending Tree, Eloan, NexTag & LowerMyBills. In fact, according to a Forrester research report in 2006, nearly 75% of all online mortgage applications were a result of online applications with lead generators who sell qualified borrower prospects to a stable of hungry mortgage brokers and lenders. Zillow’s transparent and free – yes free – mortgage marketplace aims to disrupt the mortgage lead generation category.

The servers responsible for the internet as we know it put off massive amounts of heat, and with the overall climate changes and heat on the rise, what are the possible implications? I was interviewed at SMX and it went live on YOUMoz last Friday. Figured I would link over to it, maybe someone wants to see my nerdy pictures.
“Tyler Shears is a bright search marketer working at Databanq, which specializes in the financial services game. We met at SMX West after my local panel (on which note you should read this fresh, enlightening, and generally awesome interview with Brian Gil of Yahoo, who was a co-panelist), which was great because I don’t often get to meet people in search who aren’t really active in the blogosphere. Tyler and I did an interview by email, and he was kind enough to share insights on the hyper-competitive space that is financial services (which comprises credit cards, loans, mortgages, and any kind of financing/line of credit you can imagine). Enjoy :).”

I’m flattered that from time to time our investors solicit our perspective on the changing landscape of Internet media. Most recently I was asked to provide our thoughts on the future of social networking, the business model challenges, and the core components of an effective social media platform. Business model challenges are a multi -part blog in itself, and for the purpose of this exercise I will focus on the core components of a social network and how social networks will evolve over time.
Online social networks are driven by three primary functions: communication, context, & technology (or tools).

I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time scouring the web for information on how orphaned pages are created, their effect on non-orphaned pages within a site, how they can drag your entire site into the supplemental index and how to recover or eliminate them. Jim Boykin provides great insight into the causes and effects of “supplemental hell”, one of which can be the inadvertent creation of orphaned pages. Jim provides great advice on how to ‘re-adopt’ or eliminate orphaned pages by linking to them. While this works great when a webmaster has only a few orphaned pages, larger sites that may orphan hundreds if not thousands… …

As we consider approaching the market for investment, I thought it was worth spending a few cycles to share our perspective on the Internet Marketing segment. Internet marketing companies fall into a variety of labels: search, lead generation, banners, classifieds, email, rich media, etc. According to GP Bullhound’s March 2007 Report, lead generation is the fastest growing segment of online advertising (71% year-over-year)while search marketing still represents the largest segment of the Internet Advertising market (40%). Despite the various labels, Internet marketing companies are all traffic arbitrages, facilitating the delivery of customers to advertisers.
Two fundamental characteristics distinguish one internet marketing company from the next: how is the traffic acquired, and … …
